2018: Year in Review

This past year has marked many important moments for our company, from the celebration of our 50th anniversary to the recent passing of our founder, Gilbert Horrocks. Unsurprisingly, these events have inspired us to reflect on how we have grown from a one-room office in 1968, to a company with nearly 500 employees in eight Western states. In the spirit of reflecting as we enter 2019, we want to share some highlights from 2018 and what we’re looking forward to in the new year.

Expansion

Over the course of the year, we grew in many ways, but a major area of growth was in size. Early in the year, we merged with R2H Engineering (a structural and civil engineering firm with employees in Utah, Nevada, and California). Since January of last year, we have added 137 employees, outgrown three office buildings (Las Vegas, NV; Boise, ID; and Pleasant Grove, UT), and opened three entirely new locations (San Diego, CA; Denver, CO; and Twin Falls, ID).

50th Anniversary

2018 brought  many opportunities to celebrate our 50th anniversary year, and we recognized this major milestone by taking a look back at our history. You can view our 50th anniversary tribute video on our YouTube account.

We also celebrated by hosting a movie event for our clients. This event was an opportunity to pay it forward and inspire the next generation of engineers through STEM prizes, a scholarship, and a viewing of Dream Big: Engineering Our World.

Gender Intelligence & Inclusion

In an effort to support our own employees and recognize the voice of women in engineering, Horrocks employees formed a Gender Intelligence Committee during the past year.

In addition to supporting the Gender Intelligence Committee and holding regular Gender Intelligence meetings, Horrocks sponsored the local Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) chapter and this year’s regional WTS conference. WTS is a national professional organization for women and men that provides networking and educational opportunities with the goal of supporting women within the transportation industry. You can learn more about WTS International and find local chapter information here.

Industry Recognition

In 2018, we topped UC&D’s Engineering Firm Rankings and won a number of awards for notable projects. One such project was the I-15; Brigham Road to Dixie Drive bridge replacement and highway expansion in St. George, Utah. This project won ACEC Utah’s 2019 Engineering Excellence Award in the Transportation category and UC&D’s Most Outstanding Project for Highways Over $10M. You can view a brief project highlight courtesy of UC&D Magazine here.

With all of the growth we have seen during this past year, we haven’t forgotten the many people that deserve our appreciation. We are grateful to the communities in which we serve and to the clients and industry peers with which we work. As technologies and practices change within our field, we hope to be at the forefront of those changes as we learn and shape best practices within this industry. We believe that as we continue to build on good principles of leadership and as we value our greatest resources—our employees and their families—we’ll be able to serve and work with all of you for many more years.
